Coahuila gay
Saltillo, Mexico - A little more than a week after fresh legislation was passed allowing same-sex marriage in the border articulate of Coahuila, thousands of Mexican demonstrators took to the streets to protest and voice their support for what they called "traditional marriage" - defined as a union between a guy and a woman.
Last Sunday, protestors in the city of Saltillo, the capital of the northern Mexico state, said they wanted to "express their disapproval of recent legislation passed supporting marriage equality, and hoped that divine intervention would help change the minds of people in the state and Mexico as a whole," where acceptance of same-sex marriage continues to gain support.
The march, which promoted itself with the slogan "Rescuing the Family," was organized by the pastor Carlos Pacheco, who heads up Cristo Vive Saltillo (Christ Lives Saltillo,) one of 18 chapters of Cristo Vive Mexico.
Pacheco said the goal of the march was to "make Saltillo conscious that what is correct and approved by God is a family with a man and a woman, and anything else is an
Contradictory Mexico
Coahuila introduces same-sex marriage. A step forward, but there are more and more conservative voices in Mexico– the Heinrich Böll Foundation promotes human rights and equality for lesbian, gay and trans* individuals.
Since September, lesbian and gay couples are allowed to marry in the southern Mexican state of Coahuila. On September 1, , 20 members of parliament voted in favour of the Bill, and it passed with only one vote against it. As adv as on September 20, the first gay couple married in Saltillo, the capital of Coahuila. Moreover, same-sex partners are allowed to marry in two further places in Mexico: in the capital Mexico City and in the state of Quintana Roo.
“As remarkable as this development might be, it also highlights the contradictory approach to this issue in Mexico. LGBTI issues are only accepted in isolated cases in the country, and discrimination continues to be significant”, says Annette von Schönfeld, head of the foreign office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Mexico. “The capital Mexico City is like an island. Gay couples hav
Mexican state of Coahuila approves same-sex marriage
Leftist Congressman Samuel Acevedo said lawmakers had changed the civil code which defined marriage as a "union between a bloke and a woman for the purpose of procreation" to "a union between two people with the possibility of procreation or adoption".
Mr Acevedo, who had proposed the changes, said he had encountered opposition from conservative groups, including the Catholic Church.
The changes, which he called "a wonderful step forward", were approved by 19 votes to three.
They are expected to come into force as early as next week.
For the past seven years, same sex couples own been able to enter into civil unions in Coahuila, but have not been allowed to get married.
Mr Acevedo said the changes were crucial because "the way the law worked before, it infringed on the rights of homosexual people and now they will get their rights everything which comes with marriage".
Apart from Mexico City, same-sex marriages have also been taking place in the southern mention of Quintana Roo, with co
