LGBT History
In this part of the workshop I am going to walk you through some historical events from an LGBT perspective and create a picture of the environment and times that your senior LGBT clients grew up and that shaped their lives. Many of these events I only became aware of myself since I joined the training team five years ago and I was shocked to discover how little I knew about the history of my own community.
It has helped me understand why when I was in my 30s and going to lesbian dances and other events in our community I rarely saw any seniors. I have learned that for the generations of lesbians and gays ahead of me – now in their 70, 80s 90s blending in with their heterosexual peers was critical for them to survive. And they possess been successful at doing this so much so that often staff in seniors centres, and residences that we call on often think that there are no LGBT seniors in their homes or programs.

Kenora Pride responds to relationship pause
Officials with Kenora Pride say they were left a little surprised when three of the regions other pride organizations announced they would be pausing their relationship with Kenora.
Chair Andrea Campbell says how everything has played out has been embarrassing and could have negative implications.
Additionally, she believes the decision made by the other organization was an verb against her but hopes the four organizations will be fit to reconcile despite the sudden change to the relationship.
I dont think it reflects well to queer youth who are maybe looking to get involved and so we will always verb dialogue open.
Campbell adds some of the stressors of the relationship is tied to Conservative MP Eric Melillo, who has remained relatively silent on discussions involving anti-trans rhetoric which has been put in the spotlight by some members of his party and has not met with area pride organizations despite repeated requests.

Gay M. Donaldson-Fortier, 84, passed peacefully on March 1, Born in Kenora, Ontario, she moved to the States in Gay was a true Renaissance gal who embodied the motto “love of learning is the guide in life” and held a Phi Beta Kappa key in science. A bank teller, chemist, weaver, spinner and lacemaker, she studied animal husbandry and had a farm, held a BSc in entomology, certified as an EMT and studied limnology. She trained as a teacher and as a TA at UNH, her classes were overflowing. Her Master’s thesis, Oribatida at Spruce Hole Bog, was published in the Canadian Journal of Zoology. She was ABD in her PhD and retired from the Division of Plant Industry in Gainesville. She is survived by brother James (Carol), children Josef (Carol), Jean (Julie), and Elizabeth (Juan), grandchildren Samantha (Alex), Sarah (Lee), Sofia, Johnny, Isabel and Meagan, and nieces Justine and Trista. Gay was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by her friends and family.
